Hazel Collins, Ph.D

I am a clinical psychologist working with adults and adolescents. I take an active, supportive and collaborative approach to therapeutic work, adapting treatment to the needs of the individual. I draw from my training in psychodynamic theory and technique, as well as mindfulness work, to inform and shape my work with clients. I aim to create a warm and non-judgmental atmosphere, where it is safe to explore experiences, feelings and thoughts. Through developing curiosity, self-understanding and self-compassion, old patterns can be loosened and new choices become possible. At times this involves exploring the past, while remaining attentive to present issues and experiences. This is a creative and collaborative process, which includes pragmatic problem-solving as well as deepening of awareness and opening to the unexpected.

I completed my doctorate in clinical psychology at the Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies at Adelphi University. I have worked in inpatient and outpatient settings, most recently at a college counseling center, where I found it particularly rewarding to work with students undergoing the transition to adulthood. I specialize in treating depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, and issues relating to creativity, career, identity and life transitions.
