Interpersonal Process Group

Groups can be a helpful addition to an existing treatment or can stand alone as an effective tool for growth. Group offerings at SelfWorks change throughout the year, so be sure to check our calendar or speak with your individual therapist about the unique ways group participation can benefit you.

Participating in group therapy can act as a catalyst for deeply meaningful interpersonal growth and positive psychological change. Under the guidance of two trained psychotherapists, group members will learn more about how they see themselves in the world and how others see and experience them. In group therapy, the group acts as a “social microcosm.” That means that deeply rooted relational patterns (with your boss, your romantic partner, family, etc) in the “real world” will undoubtedly manifest in the group dynamic as well. The difference is that in the group, we will use our shared space as a “relationship lab” which offers you real-time feedback on the way people experience you, as well as the opportunity to explore new, more empowered ways of being in relation with others.

You can expect to develop more confidence in forming relationships with people, find more freedom to use your voice and express yourself, develop skills to support you in navigating interpersonal conflicts, and practice using boundaries in a way that feels authentic and supportive. Interpersonal skills and perspectives acquired in this group not only affect members’ relationships with others but most importantly, can affect positive change in how members feel about themselves and their ability to enact change in their lives.

These are some of the things we hear from people who would be a great fit for group therapy:

  • “After two years of the pandemic I’ve forgotten how to interact with people, I feel socially anxious all the time.”
  • “I don’t know how to say no. Boundaries are hard for me.”
  • “I struggle to speak up and assert myself when other people are around. I clam up and get really afraid.”
  • “I feel really lonely and isolated. I want to connect with people but sometimes it feels like I don’t know how.”
  • “I experience a lot of conflict in my relationships with my loved ones”
  • “I always want everyone to like me, but it can get really exhausting.”
  • “Intimacy scares me.”

This will be a weekly commitment over the course of three months, from March 1 – June 1, 2022. The group will take place virtually, on Wednesday nights from 7:30 – 9:00pm and will consist of 8-10 individuals. Contact Sybil Ottenstein for registration and more information at


Self-Compassion Skills: A Four Week Zoom Group

At some point we all have that inner voice that tells us we’re not enough, not working hard enough, not performing our best, not giving enough…and the list goes on and on. We all too often treat ourselves with judgment, criticism, and unkindness that leaves us feeling emotionally and physically depleted. Though judgment and self-criticism may come easily, the act of treating ourselves with compassion can often times be much more challenging. Through this four-week skills group, you will learn to recognize the act of self-judgment in your daily life and respond to yourself in a compassionate, more loving way. The group offers step-by-step instructions on how to compassionately respond to yourself, provides a setting in which to practice compassionate responses on yourself and with others, and helps to plan for a more intentional, self-compassionate future.

Our meditation groups teach skills to reduce stress and promote relaxation in body and mind. No prior experience with meditation is required. This group will show you how to be mindful – essentially being present without judgment or criticism. Exercises are adapted from Dr. Amy Vigliotti’s CD, Unwind: Guided Relaxation. Benefits of a regular meditation practice include:

  • Improved physical and emotional health
  • Enhanced ability to focus and concentrate
  • A more accepting, less critical self
  • Stronger commitment to work; less burnout

  • Compassion for ourselves and others

  • Confidence and courage, even in anxiety-producing situations like interviews, performances, public speaking
